After the departure of Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull Racing has always struggled with the problem of the second driver. Both Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon were hardly able to come close to Max Verstappen. The Austrian team, therefore, decided to try a different approach this year and find someone outside of Red Bull's talent programme. Sergio Perez was chosen, as he has more experience and therefore should bring more points. However, the Mexican's season so far has been too erratic.

Perez doesn't trust the car

Former driver Juan Pablo Montoya has an explanation for this. Motorsport.com has an explanation for this. According to the Colombian Perez still has little confidence in the car. "It's hard to know because they are not very open about it. They don't really talk about how comfortable they feel with the car, or how difficult it is to drive the car."

"If you look at Red Bull, in Max's hands it looks like a really good car, stable and predictable. And he feels good about it. But if you look at Checo, he has to struggle. If you look at Perez, I think it always looks like he's going into the corner first, because he's afraid the car is going to spin going into the corner. His teammate brakes hard and he goes over the curbs on the inside. Perez probably doesn't trust the car that much," said the former Williams and McLaren driver.

Similar situation

According to Montoya, a similar situation is currently visible at McLaren: "The same goes for Ricciardo. Ricciardo is not a bad driver. I think he has a lot of talent, but Lando [Norris] is good in the car and Ricciardo is not. And that makes all the difference in the world," he explained.
