Formula One teams are increasingly gearing up for 2022, when major changes to the cars are scheduled to take place. McLaren are working hard on the new car, as technical director James Key tells Motorsport-total.com.

"The number of parts and the freedoms we have now lead to pretty high development rates in today's cars," he explains. "With these large areas you have in a 22-series car, it's a different kind of development. So you have to deal more with the fundamentals especially at this stage and try to make these large areas work the right way."

In doing so, Key says it comes down to details. "So I think it will take a while. Usually a year like this is pretty productive. We're still learning an awful lot, defining our key geometries and our architecture at this point in the year to unlock as much potential for future development."

Good season from McLaren

McLaren are having an excellent season in Formula 1. With Lando Norris, the formation has a driver who is in great shape and, for now, occupies third place in the world championship. Daniel Ricciardo can be found in ninth position.
