Susie Wolff thinks Christian Horner went too far with his remarks about Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton after the British GP in which Max Verstappen had a DNF at the hands of his British World Cup rival. The wife of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff states that the respect was far from perfect.

"It’s always difficult to put yourself in other people’s shoes," Wolff says in an interview with Express Sport. The British driver understands the frustrations that Horner let out after the Grand Prix at Silverstone, but she still thinks that her compatriot should have known better. "Obviously, he [Horner] was very upset in the moment, but of course, as a team principal, you have to sometimes take the emotion out of it and obviously stand above and make your emotions heard."

According to the team boss of Venturi, competing in Formula E, the Red Bull chief should have handled it differently. “I think you need to be very careful in those instances and not to let your emotions take over. I think in the end if it came down to one person’s viewpoint who was very emotional in that moment, and obviously, it was difficult watching Lewis go on to win the British Grand Prix and have, what made me so proud to see the whole place erupted," she explained.

Wolff points out respect

Wolff calls it explainable, but she still wants to urge Horner not to go out of his way like that again. "There’s a lot of pressure on the sport to succeed, but I think it’s about understanding that there’s a great rivalry there. But keeping it respectful and respectful is the main word because I think when emotions run high, that’s okay, because it’s in the heat of the moment, it’s competition, but just keep it respectful.”
