With Sergio Perez Mexico has, for the first time since Pedro Rodríguez in 1970, a Grand Prix-winning driver in Formula 1. Of course, this deepens the love for the sport in the country and there are even plans for a second Mexican Grand Prix.

Formula 1 to Cancun?

According to the Mexican website Reforma, Antonio Perez Garibay, Mexican politician and father of Sergio Perez, met with FIA president Jean Todt and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in Hungary to discuss his plans for a second Mexican Grand Prix. It would involve a race in the popular seaside resort of Cancun. The first race should take place in 2024 to complement the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.

Perez Garibay confirmed the conversation with Todt and Domenicali and his plans for Cancun. "There is a group of investors interested in the project. The people from Formula 1 were very interested, the plan was very well received, and we are going to start talks."

More clarity in October

According to Perez Garibay, the construction of the circuit in Cancun will take about two and a half years. There have also already been talks with the local government, where there was a positive response to the plans. "We are starting from scratch and are now starting with the letters of commitment," Perez Garibay announced. He hopes to have more clarity in October.

Todt and Domenicali additionally expressed a striking wish. "They said to us, 'Hopefully in 2024 we will already have Checo as Formula One champion'". Perez Garibay would sign up for it, of course. For now, Perez is fifth in the championship this season, well clear of his teammate Max Verstappen.
