Formula 1 is working hard to make the sport more sustainable. More biofuels are being introduced. From 2030 Formula 1 even aims for a net-zero carbon emission.

Sustainability is the future

According to Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 cannot do otherwise either. "The future of motorsport is sustainable," the 2016 German world champion told Reuters. According to Rosberg, Formula E and Formula 1 can become the two pinnacles of motorsport. "You have Formula E as the pinnacle of electric motorcycle racing and then I think you have Formula 1 as the pinnacle of synthetic fuel motorcycle racing," he said.

"Both are very exciting paths and both can have a very positive impact on our world," Rosberg continued. "And especially in terms of mobility for all of us in our daily use, it's going to be electric. It's very exciting what's possible." Rosberg also has his own team in the Extreme E-class for electric rally cars.

From the racetrack to the road

Christian Silk, team boss of Formula E team NIO 333 Racing, clearly sees the influence of motorsport on road transport. "We definitely see that what we learn on the track is carried over to the cars on the street. From the design of the batteries, the design of the electric motors to how we use the cars on the track and how we use the cars on the street. The car technology for electric cars is advancing tremendously all the time."
