The British Grand Prix saw a heavy crash between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton as early as the first lap. The Dutchman was the victim and had to leave the track, while Hamilton was the winner with a ten second penalty.

Giedo van der Garde watched the moment in disbelief, he told Formula 1 Café on Ziggo Sport. "Of course it was a serious and violent crash," the former driver stated, who found it remarkable that Verstappen got out of his car quite quickly. "I thought it was incredible that he got out so quickly. That was the bizarre thing though."

The analyst remembers well from his days as a Formula One driver that Verstappen's reaction was logical. "The first thing you do when you crash is feel if you are completely okay. Is everything still there? Legs okay? And then out and away." Van der Garde argues that there was only one person at fault in the incident. "My opinion is that Hamilton was the culprit."

Major damage to car Verstappen

Hamilton's victory leaves the Englishman just eight points behind Verstappen in the world championship. Team boss Christian Horner estimates the damage to Verstappen's car at around 1.5 million euros.
