There is a lot of discussion going on right now about what the 2025 engines should look like in Formula 1. The engine suppliers and team owners all have their own preferences, but eventually, a decision has to be made. It seems that the current turbo hybrid concept will be continued, that there will be driven with fully sustainable fuels. Possibly the hybrid component will be further explored. Christian Horner would also like to see the power units producing more decibels again.

He believes the internal combustion engine has a future: "Why don't we introduce a drivetrain with high revs and a fantastic sound that we can also run environmentally friendly? I think it would be possible with biofuel and renewable fuels," said the Red Bull Racing team boss, who would rather not see Formula One go all-electric.

Roaring F1 Engines

Horner is also particularly interested in sound: "I think Formula 1 could play a key role in fuels, [because] we are working on sustainability and zero emissions, with a high-revving powertrain that generates emotion. Wouldn't it be great if we went in that direction? I'm sure of it: every Grand Prix would take place in front of full grandstands."

In the press conference prior to the British Grand Prix, at which Motorsport-Total.com was present, Toto Wolff however let it be known that he does not want to go that way with Mercedes. "I would disagree with Christian. We might think that might be very cool, but we are just not the most relevant generation anymore."

Is sound still important?

The Austrian team boss doesn't think loud engines are as important as they used to be ."You can ask an 18- or 22-year-old what relevance noise has for him. Most of them consume [Formula 1] through different devices where the sound has little or no relevance. I personally like the sound. I'd love to have a twelve-cylinder tearing across the road. But: we are just a sport and we are a business."
