Since 2014, Mercedes has been the dominant force in Formula 1. This season, however, it is Red Bull Racing that seems to have the fastest car. Toto Wolff sees that too, although he doesn't think there's any shame in it either, after seven years of being the strongest in Formula 1.

"We know we've been extraordinary the last seven years. It's a test, we are the challengers and have to work our way back up," the Mercedes team boss explained in conversation with RTL. "We have to acknowledge that the regulations have thwarted our plans. Maybe we could have avoided it or we could have handled it differently, but it is what it is."

Mercedes makes many mistakes

Wolff is far from giving in, however, and although the development of the 2022 car is becoming increasingly important, Wolff is still pushing for an eighth world title for Mercedes."We will now fight to keep the World Championship exciting for as long as possible. This season Mercedes is making unusual mistakes, such as in Monaco and Baku. All have cost points, leaving Red Bull in the lead.

"I think the mistakes we saw were unusual. It could be that in recent years we always had a margin. The errors were very different, whether they were human errors, where maybe we wanted to achieve something that our equipment couldn't," Wolff concluded.
