Team grades: At Mercedes, the result ultimately counts

The British Grand Prix ensured F1 fans were on the edge of their seats with Max Verstappen's hard crash and a thrilling battle for victory between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Here are the team ratings from GPblog.

Red Bull Racing: 2.5

It was a dramatic weekend for Red Bull Racing, and they failed to score a single point. Max Verstappen had a strong weekend up until Sunday, taking the win in the first ever sprint race in Formula 1, and securing pole position before the collision with Hamilton. Sergio Perez, on the other hand, spun in the sprint race and started the race from the pit lane. He then pitted late on to secure the fastest lap and finished down in P16. It was a woeful Sunday for Christian Horner's team.

Mercedes: 9

Whether it was a racing incident or not, Lewis Hamilton did an excellent job at Silverstone and Mercedes have now closed in on Red Bull Racing. Hamilton was given a time penalty and still won the race, with Valtteri Bottas alongside him on the podium, and it's the result that counts in the end.

McLaren: 8.5

For a brief moment there was hope that Lando Norris would have a chance at victory, but that turned out to be too unrealistic. With a fourth place for Norris and a fifth place for Daniel Ricciardo, the team again scored good points in their battle with Ferrari for third place in the Constructors' Championship.

Ferrari: 9.5

Charles Leclerc led 50 of the 53 laps, but couldn't keep Hamilton behind him in the end. It was still an excellent result for Ferrari who are closing in on McLaren for third place in the championship thanks to their 26 points. If it wasn't for Carlos Sainz's difficult pit stop, even more points could have been scored.

AlphaTauri: 5

Red Bull Racing's sister team didn't have it easy this weekend. Only one point was scored thanks to Yuki Tsunoda's tenth place. Pierre Gasly had a chance to score points for a long time, but a puncture put a spanner in the works for the Frenchman. 

Aston Martin: 5

Sebastian Vettel started the weekend well with a 10th place in qualifying and an eighth place in the sprint race, but the German eliminated himself in the race by spinning, throwing away valuable points. Lance Stroll kept the damage reduced with an eighth place finish.

Alpine: 8

Fernando Alonso seems to be getting more comfortable in the Alpine. In the sprint race, the Spaniard worked his way up from 11th to seventh place, where he also finished on Sunday. He scored points for the fifth race in a row, and Esteban Ocon also scored points, for him it was the first time in five races that he'd finished in the top 10. The French team has even caught up with AlphaTauri and Aston Martin in the championship.

Alfa Romeo: 4

It was a fairly nothing race for Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi. Raikkonen started well but faded late on, meaning the team's drivers finished in 14th and 15th, failing to add to their tally of points.

Williams: 6

It's great to see what George Russell can do with the Williams in qualifying, but the race pace isn't there. At Silverstone Russell qualified in eighth in the sprint race he finished ninth. Due to a grid penalty, he started the race in 12th place and was unable to move up, finishes in that same place. Nicholas Latifi had yet another unremarkable weekend and finished 14th. Williams seem to be improving, slowly but surely.

Haas: 4

Once again Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin finished at the back of the grid, although it was Mazepin who finished ahead of Schumacher this time around. Haas' season is long past salvageable. They will hope next year will be a lot better.
