Charles Leclerc had a good chance of victory at the British Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon but was cruelly denied right at the end. It was Lewis Hamilton who took the win in the end and the 25 points for a P1 finish.

After passing Valtteri Bottas off the line, Leclerc was in P3 around the first few corners. Then, when Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided, he managed to take the lead. After the restart, he surprisingly kept the lead, and displayed the race pace of his Ferrari, by holding off Bottas and Hamilton for the majority of the race.

The Ferrari driver surprised the spectators in the stands by battling right up there with Mercedes. "It’s difficult to enjoy 100%", he commented afterwards at the FIA press conference. "Of course it’s been an incredible race. I gave not 100% but 200%. I gave all of me, but it was just not enough in the last two laps."

The driver then paid his compliments to Hamilton, who overtook him a few laps before the end. "Congratulations to Lewis, he did an incredible job and it’s amazing to see so many fans in the grandstand. It was fun in the car but I lacked just a little bit of pace towards the end."

Hamilton versus Verstappen

The seven-time world champion received a ten-second penalty during the race for the incident with Max Verstappen, when the pair made contact, and Verstappen spun into the barriers. Hamilton's victory means he is now just eight points behind Verstappen.
