Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided at high speed during Sunday's British Grand Prix. Hamilton was able to carry on, but the Dutchman flew into the tyre wall. The stewards deemed Hamilton to be at fault and handed the Brit with a ten-second penalty which he served during his first pitstop.

Hamilton went on to win the race, his first victory in over two months of Formula 1 action and this allowed him to significantly close the gap on Verstappen in the World Championship. His title rival visited the hospital following the crash, and Hamilton admitted his concern in the FIA press conference.

"I heard that Max is in hospital and that definitely concerns me. None of us ever want any of us to ever get injured, that’s never my intention, so I really hope that he’s OK. I’ll give him… I’ll hit him up after this just to check that he’s OK and we live to fight another day," Hamilton said.

The battle continues

Hamilton is trying to win his eighth World Championship, whilst this is Verstappen's first title fight. The 36-year-old Brit disagrees with the stewards decision but doesn't want to complain.

"Look, at the end of the day I’ve not really seen the footage. I saw a quick clip of it when I went back to the garage but I naturally will go back and have time to reflect on it. I don’t think, from my current understanding, that I’m in a position to have to apologise for anything. We’re out there racing," Hamilton added.

"There’ll be a lot of tough races coming up and we have to learn to strike a decent balance. I don’t agree with stewards but I take my penalty on the chin and get on with my job. I’m not going to whine about it. Everyone’s going to have a different opinion. I don’t really particularly care what people think so I just do what I do and I’m really grateful for today."

Verstappen's lead in the Championship has been cut to eight. The battle resumes in Hungary at the end of July.
