It was the defining moment of the British Grand Prix. The hard crash of Max Verstappen after a collision with Lewis Hamilton in the opening lap. Hamilton was given a ten second time penalty but still managed to win the race by overtaking Charles Leclerc a few laps before the end.

Thoughts on Verstappen

After the race, Hamilton was quick to point his finger at Verstappen when it came to apportioning blame for the crash. In front of the cameras of Ziggo Sport, the seven-time world champion was a little more nuanced. "I was going for a gap. I was halfway along, if not a little more and we collided. These things happen. I heard Max is in hospital, so my thoughts are with him."

Hamilton stressed that this is absolutely not what he wants in a race. "We both gave absolutely everything and nobody wanted to give up. This was unfortunate." The Mercedes driver says he wants to give Verstappen a call. "I do want to ask how he is doing and that he is unharmed because that is the most important thing."

No regrets about his actions

Although Hamilton regrets the outcome of his failed overtaking attempt, he has no regrets about today. "I only regret that we collided, but I don't feel like I made a mistake. This is racing. We race at high speed and you don't always do it right."

As a result, Hamilton doesn't think he's the only one to blame. "I don't think today was one hundred percent the fault of one person, we were both involved in this. I'm not going to say who is more at fault and who is not. We were racing. I got the penalty and I had to get on with my job. I kept going and didn't give up."
