Toto Wolff offers neutral opinion: 'An accident involves two drivers'

Toto Wolff will be happy with the performance of his drivers today, with Lewis Hamilton claiming victory and Valtteri Bottas standing alongside him on the podium. However, the main talking point from the race will be the collision between Hamilton and Max Verstappen on the opening lap, which sent the Dutchman flying into the tyre wall and off to the hospital.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the race and incident, the Mercedes Team Principal started off by expressing his happiness on the race action after the red flag.

"I think first of all we have seen a dramatic and exciting race today. Lewis winning the British Grand Prix again and catching Charles again. I think that was something for everybody."

Incident can be blamed on Hamilton and Verstappen

When questioned specifically about the incident, Wolff explained how both drivers can be responsible but should be looked into carefully. "It always takes two to tango and these two are not giving each other an inch and it's a high-speed corner and these things are nasty to look at but there is a clear regulation."

He went on to add and explain his feeling once again that both drivers contributed to the incident, saying; "if you are a racing driver, you may have a different perspective in the car. But you need to understand that if the front axle is over the middle of the car on the outside it's your corner and you can say its that the corner that is equivalent to any other? Maybe not. An accident involves two drivers."

Penalty deserved?

Wolff went on to add that the penalty given is one who you to expect and take on the chin whilst the race is going on, stating that, "they were racing each other hard and you must take that. The stewards expressed a penalty and you must take that and take that because it was high speed. It is what it is."
