Like many fans, former Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber is enjoying the current season, especially the titanic battle between old hand Lewis Hamilton and the forerunner of the young guard Max Verstappen. According to Webber, sprint races are no longer even necessary to make the season exciting now that Mercedes and Red Bull have joined forces.

Are sprint races still necessary?

Speaking to the Australian Nine.com Webber says: "F1 is trying to do something different to generate some interest. We'll see how it goes. I don't know if F1 should do it now, but the idea came after so many years of Mercedes dominance. In 2019 or 2020 people wanted to make it more competitive. But Max and Lewis have already done that this year, haven't they?"

"F1 is still the pinnacle, and as we've seen so far, this year is one of the best we've had in a long time, without making a single change," said Webber. "With Lewis and Max at their best it has been extraordinary, the quality has been insane. Like during the French race, where Max passed Lewis right at the end, and Bahrain, when they battled to the finish."

Nothing decided yet

According to the Australian, however, the battle is far from decided: "Lewis was very strong in Silverstone and Budapest, so if he can get on track there, the momentum could shift back to him. He will never give up, he is extraordinary. Red Bull has a slightly better car at the moment and Max is making the most of it. As always, the best drivers are in the best cars."
