Alonso: 'I am proud that I did not win because of a dominant car or luck'

Fernando Alonso has not always been lucky with his choices in Formula 1. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest drivers ever, and the fact that he 'only' has two world titles to his name doesn't fully support that view.

The Spaniard himself agrees with those who think he could have won three or four more titles. The potential was definitely there, but due to some unfortunate choices, it didn't fully materialize. "Yes, that's true", he replies to the question of Agencia EFE whether indeed he could have had five or six world titles.

Alonso proud of his achievements 'without a dominant car'

"We have been champions twice and runners-up four times, three of them by less than three points," explained the 39-year-old. "Apart from those two championships, we fought to the last race for five or six years, and in that last race we were often still leading the championship for a large part."

He continued: "I'm proud of that. That it wasn't a championship we won because of a dominant car or by luck. I think we have always been a strong team that is not willing to give up in any circumstance." Alonso underlined that fact once again with his battle with George Russell in the closing stages of the Austrian Grand Prix, where both drivers indicated it was as if they were 'fighting for the championship'.
