Did Gasly struggle with Verstappen? 'Maybe that was the problem'

Pierre Gasly spent six months getting a taste of the real thing at Red Bull Racing, but moved on to AlphaTauri after failing to impress. With Sergio Perez performing well, it remains to be seen whether the Frenchman will get another chance at Red Bull.

In 2019, Gasly was given the chance at Red Bull Racing as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo, but it didn't go as desired. He was pushed aside after six months, and whilst Alexander Albon failed just like Gasly alongside Max Verstappen, the arrival of Perez has now been a success. What does that mean for Gasly's future?

''The situation for him is mentally very different now. He doesn't have Max Verstappen next to him in the same car anymore. Maybe that was the problem he couldn't deal with mentally, having such a strong teammate. That's also the problem for Red Bull. Yes, he's performing at AlphaTauri now, but you don't know if he'll be able to do the same at Red Bull,'' Nico Rosberg says according to Motorsport-total.com.

According to Paul di Resta, AlphaTauri is therefore a great place for Gasly. ''He's a good reference for Red Bull's juniors coming into F1. He's given Tsunoda a bit of a wake-up call. On the other hand, there will also come a time when he wonders if he can take the next step to Red Bull. However, he is very honest that the team must want him as much as he wants to make that step'', concluded the former F1 driver.
