HOT TAKE: Softer tyre compound provide more spectacle and strategic variety

We have been able to compare what the difference between harder and softer tyres do for the entertainment during the race over the last two weekends. The Austrian GP was driven with three softer sets of tyres than the Styrian GP.

The question that immediately comes up is: was there a big difference in entertainment between the Styrian GP and the Austrian GP and was there a strategic difference to be noticed? Many people insinuated this beforehand. The result and the winner was in any case the same. Just like during the Styrian GP, Max Verstappen dominated the Austrian GP last weekend.

Softer tyre better for entertainment during the race?

It was noticeable that there were more pit stops during the Austrian GP than during the Styrian GP. But the difference was nil. Where during the Styrian GP only four teams made two pitstops, during the Austrian GP this was the case for seven drivers. Verstappen's fastest pit stop is also part of this. In total 29 pitstops took place during the Austrian GP. During the Styrian GP there were 26.

The difference is therefore three more pitstops with a softer tyre. There were probably more fights and overtakes during the Austrian Grand Prix, but in terms of the number of pitstops that teams make during the race and the variation in strategies the difference is not too big.
