This driver was the most successful in the last ten French Grands Prix
Sunday, June 20 will see the French Grand Prix, the first race of the upcoming triple-header. The previous edition of the race at the Paul Ricard circuit went down in the books as perhaps the most boring Formula 1 race ever, and it perhaps fits better in the role of test circuit that it previously had. However, the history of races in France goes back much further, when they were held at Magny-Cours. Which drivers won the race in the last twenty years?
Between 1971 and 1990 the French Grand Prix took place 14 times at the Paul Ricard circuit but even then it was not known for exciting fights. For this reason, the French Grand Prix moved to Magny-Cours, where it was held from 1991 to 2008. In 2018, Formula 1 returned to France after a ten-year absence, this time again to Paul Ricard.
Winners in the history of the French Grand Prix
Due to the long absence of Formula 1 in France, the list of the last ten winners of the French Grand Prix consists mostly of old friends. Michael Schumacher won four of the last ten editions: in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 he was in combination with the very strong Ferrari too fast for the rest of the field.
Ralf Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa also all scored a victory at Magny-Cours. In 2008, Massa was the last one to win the race at that circuit. Since returning to Paul Ricard, both races have been won by Lewis Hamilton. He wrote the Grand Prix to his name in both 2018 and 2019. In 2020 the race did not take place due to the coronavirus, and so on Sunday Hamilton will have the chance to win it for the third time in a row. Or will Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing pull something out of the hat this time?
