Lewis Hamilton is just enjoying the battle with Max Verstappen in Formula 1; he also likes to see other young guys getting stronger and stronger. The Mercedes driver thinks the pinnacle of motorsport has a bright future ahead of it with all the talent coming through in recent years.

When asked by Corriere della Sera Hamilton was asked what he thought of Leclerc, he replied: "I don't watch a lot of rivals, but the new [drivers] are great. Lando Norris, George Russell, Charles and especially Carlos: when he got into Ferrari he was very good straight away. He and Leclerc are a very strong pair. Formula 1 is in good hands."

Respect from Verstappen

However, the battle for the world title is not with these men, but with Max Verstappen. This is the first time that there is actually a duel between the two drivers because in recent seasons Red Bull Racing's car was always not fast enough. Verstappen has said on numerous occasions that he has a great deal of respect for the record champion in 2021.

Yet the two top drivers have already fought out some tough battles. Does Hamilton notice the respect from the Dutchman? "Yes, on and off the track," he says resolutely. "That doesn't have to change. He is an extraordinary driver and it is very nice to compete against him," Hamilton said in conversation with the Italian medium.

Hamilton stands up for Osaka

Last week Hamilton also stood up for tennis star Naomi Osaka, who refused to attend the obligatory press conference at the prestigious Roland Garros tournament. According to the Japanese, there are only questions asked which damage her self-confidence. Hamilton understands the number two of the world perfectly, but he is critical of the fact that the tournament management immediately threatened to disqualify Osaka. Eventually, Osaka decided to leave Paris herself. Hamilton sent her a message.

"When you're young, you're often thrown into the arena unprepared and you feel the pressure. It happened to me too, you learn from mistakes. Getting fined for talking about your mental health is no fun, but all the reactions against her were really ridiculous. The affair had to be handled differently. Naomi is a great activist and a great athlete, but first of all, let's remember that she is a human being," Hamilton concludes.
