Formula 1 is preparing for stricter rules regarding the flexi-wings. As the tests will only take place during the French Grand Prix, the teams could still drive with the wings in Azerbaijan. Mercedes and McLaren threatened to protest but did not. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing already made some changes to its own wing.

The Austrian racing team has been in the spotlight in recent weeks because of its flexi-wings. Although other teams also use such techniques, Red Bull as leader in the world championship stood out the most. In Baku, the team made some changes. "The team opted to run without a Gurney flap on the trailing edge of the wing though, sacrificing some balance for straight line speed," explains Motorsport.com explains.

The new wing consists of a main section with a deeper central section to provide downforce. "The outer channels are shallower in order that the resultant tip vortex created by the airflow’s collision with the endplate is lessened. To feed into this, Red Bull also made changes to its endplate design, returning to a more plain design in order that it would be less aggressive on the airflow."

Red Bull did an excellent job in Azerbaijan

Red Bull didn't sacrifice much on speed, as Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez were very fast in Baku. The Mexican took the top spot, while Verstappen missed the end of the race due to a blowout.
