Peter Windsor has praised Sergio Perez for his first win for Red Bull Racing. The analyst says he initially did teammate Max Verstappen a great service by making life difficult for Lewis Hamilton, only to walk away with the win himself after Verstappen's blowout.

Red Bull had best package

"There is no doubt that Red Bull-Honda had the best all-round package in Baku," says Windsor in his new analysis on YouTube. The first one-two since 2016 seemed to be in the making for the Austrian racing team, but Verstappen's left rear tyre put a stop to that three laps before the end.

And that while the world championship leader was so dominant on the street circuit. "Verstappen controlled the race more or less how he liked. Putting in fastest laps when he needed to," said the F1 presenter, who also saw the Dutchman's teammate impress. "Sergio Perez running about three seconds behind Max, having made a great start on lap one with some good passes on lap one, showing some non-Perez like aggression."

Perez shows it

Finally, the Mexican did what he was brought in for at Red Bull: namely, put pressure on Mercedes. "He did a perfect job for Max, giving him the free air to do what he likes. And he kept Lewis at bay. There's no doubt Sergio was driving at just the right pace just to make sure there was no way Lewis could get near him as they came towards the end of the lap where Mercedes for sure had the quicker car in a straight line."

Red Bull was driving with more downforce than Hamilton, allowing a gap to be drawn in the second sector each time that was just big enough to keep the W12 at enough distance towards turn one.
