Red Bull have promoted Pierre Wache from chief engineer of performance to technical director in a move they say is "part of the evolution" of the teams structure.

Adrian Newey remains as Chief Technical Officer, but with a lot of his time taken up by Aston Martin's Valkyrie project, Wache has been promoted to compensate for that.

Team principal Christian Horner told Autosport: "It's part of our evolution.

"Adrian remains CTO, Pierre has moved into a central role as technical director, and Rob Marshall's position remains unchanged as chief engineering officer."

Red Bull are hoping to bring the drivers and constructors' title back to Milton Keynes for the first time since 2013 this year, and after positive testing they will be hoping to take the fight to Mercedes from the off in Melbourne.

Wache meanwhile, spoke to L'Equipe regarding his promotion, and said: "I understand what this position represents and the risks that come with it.

"I won't say it scares me but i know the results that are asked with it and I would like to show that I am capable of achieving them.

"I won't change everything, but I will necessarily work differently.

"Adrian worked more on the aerodynamic side of things, and I'm more focussed about putting the power down on the ground."

Wache specialises in tyres and mechanics, so Red Bull have a good team set up, with Wache's skills complimenting the aerodynamic genius of Newey.
