Lewis Hamilton had a great opportunity to pass Max Verstappen in the world championship, but the British driver failed to do so. He wasted his restart by shooting straight through at the first corner. Hamilton knows there was a huge opportunity in Baku on Sunday that he missed.

"To be honest, this is a humbling experience," said a very disappointed Hamilton to Sky Sports. "I worked so hard to get back into the top-ten (after the dramatic Friday, ed.) It looked so good."

Hamilton puts on penance

The World Cup number two continued: "This is so hard to accept. I feel so sorry for the team. They have worked so hard. We're going to come back stronger," said Hamilton."It is what it is."

The British driver also commented briefly on Max Verstappen's retirement. "It's unfortunate for Max of course. There was a lot of bad luck today."

Switch cause of issue

When speaking to his team Hamilton mentioned that a switch was the cause of the issue at the restart. He explained how he didn't realise that he had touched the switch which resulted in him dropping to last place but still remains humble about the result.

"Yeah! I had no idea that I touched it. For sure, I think... very unfortunate for Max. Today is a good stroke of bad luck. We will try and regroup and go for the race."
