Verstappen made history two weeks ago by taking the lead in the world championship for the first time in his career. The Dutchman did much better than Hamilton in Monaco, turning a small deficit into a narrow lead. Mercedes was keen to do a lot better in Baku, but the first day did not bode well. Hamilton was no further than seventh and eleventh position, giving the German team plenty to work on overnight. 

On the other hand Pérez could be very satisfied with the result after the first two free practices. The Mexican received a lot of criticism on his performance during the first phase of the season, but remained confident about a good result. Although the free practice sessions say nothing about qualifying and the race, the morning and afternoon session on Friday will have given him confidence.

Battle between Mercedes and Red Bull
