Sebastian Vettel hasn't had the season he hoped for so far. At Aston Martin the German wanted to score a lot of points with a podium here and there. So far he has only finished in the points once in five races.

Midfield closer than it looks

"We expected to be a bit faster, but the new rules seem to have hit us harder than our opponents. But we accept that and we will take up the challenge," Vettel said in conversation with Autowereld.be. Despite McLaren and Ferrari already being well ahead of Aston Martin, Vettel thinks the midfield is very close. Small improvements to the car could make a big difference he thinks.

The season hasn't been easy so far. After four races Vettel finally managed to score his first points in Monaco. A nice fifth place after the retirements of Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas and a good strategy helped him.

Vettel knows how to deal with setbacks

But those setbacks are part of life. Vettel therefore tries not to dwell too long on a failed race, but likes to think ahead. "Sometimes you don't have much of a choice and you just have to get through it. It can help to remember that the next race is usually not far away, so you can keep your eye on the future," said the four-time world champion.

"Also, it's important to understand where it went wrong, was it because of you or something or someone else? It is important that you can analyse and then close the chapter when you have drawn your conclusions," Vettel concludes.
