In a video by Formel1.de Marc Surer expressed his reservations about Mercedes' threat to protest against Red Bull Racing's rear wing. According to Surer, Red Bull didn't do anything wrong, but were very smart.

After the Spanish Grand Prix the subject of 'Flexwings' suddenly became very important. Red Bull Racing would, just like some other teams, have a rear wing that moves too much according to Mercedes. The FIA saw this as well and decided to introduce new tests as from the French Grand Prix. Mercedes however thinks this is too late and threatens a protest in Azerbaijan.

Red Bull benefits from the rules

''I don't think a protest will get them anything, because Red Bull is not doing anything illegal. There is no cheating there. The rules are just being used optimally,'' says the former Formula One driver. ''It's about the measurement now becoming heavier, so the wing now has to be made stiffer. However, Red Bull had no mechanism to push the rear wing back, so they didn't cheat. As stewards you can't punish someone who takes advantage of the regulations.''

According to Surer, Red Bull can therefore not be blamed at all. ''If a car passes that test and the wing doesn't bend more than allowed, there's nothing you can do. Red Bull has made optimum use of the regulations. It must be an advantage in Baku with that long straight'', concludes the Swiss.
