Formula 1 will test a sprint race during a number of Grands Prix this season to investigate the possibilities for the future. It should contribute to making the race weekends more fun to watch. Ross Brawn expects a lot from it.

The first sprint race will take place at the British Grand Prix scheduled for the weekend of July 18. Brawn believes it can make a great contribution to the current Formula One weekend. "We've been working on trying to get a sprint race format for a number of years, and it is now part of the whole weekend," he says in a live interview with The Muscle Help Foundation.

Sprint races for young people

Brawn suspects that the new format will do especially well with young people who have other aspirations. "Young people don't necessarily want to watch two hours of racing on a Sunday afternoon, we may find a short format of racing is more appealing to them. But we don't want to disorientate our loyal fans who are really the core of our sport."

So it seems ideal to Brawn to find a combination for all age groups. "And that's what we're testing. So we'll do three races this year, we'll take stock, and then we'll decide what the next step is for the future."
