Former F1 driver Reutemann in stable condition after endoscopic procedure

Last May 8, former F1 driver Carlos Reutemann was hospitalized due to internal bleeding. The situation worsened last Saturday, but now a few days later the 79-year-old former driver is doing better. At this moment Reutemann is stable, according to the hospital.

Internal bleeding

Following the internal bleeding, Reutemann underwent an endoscopic procedure on Tuesday to treat the digestive bleeding. Following this procedure, the twelve-time Grand Prix winner is currently in a stable condition at the hospital in Rosario, where he remains in intensive care for the time being.

The good news is that after the procedure there are no signs of new digestive bleeding, so he is stable. Reutemann is able to communicate clearly and is not suffering from any other organ failure, the hospital said in a statement. Whether further surgery is required is not known at this time.

Participation in more than 100 Grands Prix

Reutemann participated in 146 Grands Prix during his career and that in a period from 1972 until 1982. He won twelve times for Brabham, Ferrari and Williams. In his career he was on the podium 46 times and once he was very close to the championship. In 1981 he lost in the last Grand Prix to Nelson Piquet on whom he initially had a one point lead.

After his Formula 1 career, Reutemann focused on a political career. He became governor of the province of Santa Fe in Argentina and later in his career he became a federal senator. He also considered running for the presidency of Argentina in 2011, but after consideration he abandoned that move.
