Max Verstappen has been seen as the big star for the future ever since he entered Formula 1. However, the Dutchman has so far lacked the resources to become champion, although this year the battle is fiercer than ever. The focus is often on Verstappen, but according to Toto Wolff the Dutchman is not the only star in the sport.

Future star

Lewis Hamilton is on a roll with seven titles, but at 36 years of age the British driver is nearing the end of his career. Now Hamilton does not want to stop, as he is at his peak. However, the valley that follows will come faster for him than for Verstappen.

So logically the eyes are always on Verstappen as the future champion, but that is certainly not the only thing we should be focussing on. That is what Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says in conversation with Motorsport.com. He agrees that Verstappen is a star for the future, but there are more drivers on the way who are also very talented.

Wolff: "Max is absolutely a fantastic star for the future, but he is not the only one. There is a group of very good and young drivers coming up who are not yet in cars that can win. It will be nice to see how that will unfold."

And with that, Wolff is of course referring to youngsters in the sport, who are absolutely promising for a bright future in Formula One. These include George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Yuki Tsunoda and possibly Mick Schumacher. Drivers that Verstappen and Hamilton don't have to compete against, but that can change in the future with shifts of drivers between teams.
