After the Spanish Grand Prix the discussion was mainly about Red Bull Racing's strategy. Had they failed, or was Mercedes simply too fast? Robert Doornbos thinks there was not much more in it for Max Verstappen.

Mercedes wins with correct strategy

In Barcelona Hamilton and Verstappen battled for victory. The Dutchman did good business at the start, by outsmarting Hamilton right at the first corner. The Red Bull driver held on for a long time, but had to give up at the end of the race. The two-stop strategy of Mercedes proved to be faster.

''For the one-stopper that Red Bull had in mind, it was important to strike at the first corner. Well, Max did that in an insane way, but after that the picture quickly became clear. Lewis was able to easily follow Max for the first twenty laps and then drove half a second a lap faster on mediums. Then it's abundantly clear that there was simply more speed in that car. Then you can think of all the strategies in the world as a team, but you will not get there'', Doornbos tells Motorsport.com.

Red Bull falls short

I can understand Red Bull saying 'we'll just go to the end and see what happens'. Track position is very important here and they didn't want to give it up. With this approach, the scenario of Hungary was of course lurking, but to go pitting and do all sorts of other things... They did make that stop in the end, but purely with an eye on the fastest lap and no longer for the victory.''

According to Doornbos there is no point in talking about what could have happened with a different strategy. Mercedes won because of a correct strategy, but also because they were simply faster. ''Definitely. I think there definitely wouldn't have been more in it for Red Bull given the speed of the car'', concludes the former F1 driver.
