Alfa Romeo have suffered a second setback in Portugal. After both Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi failed to score points on the Portimao circuit, the Swiss team was informed by the FIA that their appeal against the result of the Imola Grand Prix has been rejected.

Raikkonen finished ninth on the Italian track, but ended up with a thirty second time penalty that left him out of the points. During the formation lap after the red flag, the Finn shot off track and as a result Lewis Hamilton and Yuki Tsunoda passed him. Raikkonen should have regained his position according to FIA regulations, but he did not.

Stewards do not give in

As a result Alfa Romeo received a substantial time penalty, while Raikkonen was already penalised for dropping two positions. The protest was rejected, despite the fact that new evidence was brought forward. The stewards have ruled that the penalty remains in place. Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso benefit from this.

Alfa Romeo now announces via social channels that it respects the decision of the FIA and that it will now fully focus on the Spanish Grand Prix. This will take place next week at the circuit of Barcelona.
