When Lewis Hamilton had his contract with Mercedes renewed for just one season, many a Formula One expert was convinced that the seven-time world champion will make his exit from motorsport's premier class after 2021. However, this weekend both Hamilton and Wolff have contradicted this, and a contract extension with Mercedes seems a likely option for the Briton.

During Thursday's press briefing, Hamilton already hinted that he may yet want to sign on to remain in Formula One in 2022. Hamilton acknowledged that he "planning to be there next year." His current contract with Mercedes runs until the end of the current season, something that caused a furore during the announcement.

Wolff confirms

On Friday, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff gave additional weight to Hamilton's statement. In the press conference for team bosses the Austrian stated that the cooperation between the team and the driver is still good enough for an additional year. "This is the best place for him," Wolff knows.

"Lewis has been with us for a long time, and as long as we can offer him a competitive package, I see no reason why we should not go ahead and continue our marriage. ... What we had already discussed on a confidential level has now come out in public. And I am happy about it." Wolff said.
