Hamilton wants to stay in F1 for diversity and considers social media boycott

Lewis Hamilton is now 36, normally an age when F1 drivers consider retiring. This will also be in the back of his mind. He only has a one year contract with Mercedes for a reason. However, at the moment he is planning to continue.

Hamilton wants to stay in position

Hamilton could in theory break all records this season. With an eighth world title under his belt, he would be the most successful F1 driver of all time. A perfect moment to quit you might say, but the Briton has no plans to do so. He has not only sporting reasons to continue.

"I'm enjoying this fight, it's getting more and more exciting and challenging," the world champion is quoted as saying by Formule1.nl. "I also still really enjoy working with the team and the steps Mercedes is taking to become more and more diverse. As a sport, we do have a lot of work to do. When I'm here I can also play a bigger role in that than when I'm not in Formula One."

This weekend Hamilton is considering participating in a social media boycott that has been launched in the British sports world. They are doing so to protest against the online hatred and discrimination taking place on social media platforms. "For me, it's clear that racism remains an issue and that social media platforms need to do more. They are in a position to take steps to help create an anti-racist society," Hamilton said.
