There is a lot to be said for this year's rule changes. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff does not rule out the possibility that these rule changes were introduced to slow down Mercedes.

New regulations disadvantage Mercedes and Aston Martin

For years Mercedes have been the leader in Formula 1, but as of this year Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen seem to be threatening the German team. The new rule changes seem to work in favour of the cars with high rake, like the Red Bull. Teams like Mercedes and Aston Martin with low rake are at a disadvantage.

Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer has already said that he is not happy with the changes; whilst his team was able to score good points last year and even reach the podium on several occasions, his team is now fighting for the last few points.

Wolff agrees with Szafnauer

"As a multiple world champion, I don't want to make a direct mistake when a rule change comes into effect. But they do have a valid point," Wolff speaks to ORF about Aston Martin. The Austrian believes Mercedes and Aston Martin have been hit hardest.

Wolff doesn't find it surprising that Aston Martin is protesting after the team performed very well in 2020 (as Racing Point). "If you then consider that Aston Martin is a good and important brand and suddenly they are nowhere, I understand that they are rebelling," he concluded.
