Nyck de Vries was unable to follow up on his victory on Saturday at the circuit of Valencia. The Mercedes driver remained pointless, although he managed to maintain his leading position in the Formula E championship. De Vries had bad luck in qualifying and was unable to make up for it in the second race of the weekend.

"That was a tough race today," says De Vries in Mercedes' press release after the sixth ePrix of the season in Spain. The Dutchman was hoping to secure a great starting position in the morning, but the weather conditions turned out to be quite unfavourable. "Unfortunately, it stopped raining before qualifying, so the track gradually dried out, which really put drivers in Group 1 on the back foot."

De Vries was one of the men who was first allowed to try and set a good time. More than a twentieth time was therefore not possible. "In the end, everyone in the fourth group went through to the Super Pole session." Team mate Stoffel Vandoorne and fellow countryman Robin Frijns had the same misfortune. They finished nineteenth and seventeenth respectively.

Monaco next chance for De Vries

Full of hope, the 26-year-old driver from Sneek went into the race a few hours later, but there was no overtaking race. "From the back of the grid, we didn't have it easy at all right from the start. We got away well, but then I made a mistake, and we didn't always make the right calls at the right time either. All in all, it was a tough race. There's nothing more to say about it really. I think we've got the pace, so now, we just need to look ahead and strike back in Monaco."
