Red Bull Racing are looking very strong in qualifying in 2021, but Christian Horner reckons that Mercedes are proving to be the dominant force on Sunday, especially at the end of a stint. This was not the case in previous seasons in Formula 1, but there seems to have been a change.

"Mercedes seemed to be faster at the end of their stints both in Bahrain and Imola. They use their tyres better and are therefore faster at the end of a stint", Horner is quoted by Channel 4. This fact gives Mercedes a strategic advantage, because the possibility of an overcut is always open. Moreover in the last laps of a Grand Prix they can push hard to attack or just pull away.

So in this area there is work to be done, but in general Mercedes shows a very good speed during the races. "In fact, in free air Mercedes were very, very competitive," he said. According to Red Bull's team boss, both teams are not much inferior to each other.

Focus on 2022 or keep developing?

It will therefore be very important for Mercedes and Red Bull to continue to develop. However, next season the new regulations will be introduced in Formula 1. These rules will remain in place for the next few years, so it is very important to be competitive from the start and not miss the mark. However, the teams are now also faced with limited capacity due to the budget cap and so choices have to be made: when to stop developing the 2021 car? Red Bull has no intention of stopping any time soon.
