While the brand new Aston Martin objected to the recent aerodynamic modifications prior to the Grand Prix at Imola, believing that it unfairly disadvantaged the low-rake design Formula 1 cars, the team is now changing its mind, team principal Otmar Szafnauer explained.

Speaking to journalists, Szafnauer explained how the FIA has entered into discussions with Aston Martin about the concerns expressed, and that this has restored the team's confidence. “I think we’re, at this point, pretty satisfied that all the correct steps were followed," said Szafnauer about the introduction of the new aero rules, as quoted by The Race.

Aston Martin, like Mercedes, is one of the teams that bet on the low-rake concept this year, where the rear suspension is relatively lower. However, this has not worked out well for the teams concerned; almost all of them are not driving the pace that was hoped for. Szafnauer therefore pleaded for a change in the regulations, so that his team could keep up with the rest of the field.

Still in discussion

"We’re still in discussion," Szafnauer continued. "We’re just trying to discover what all the steps were to make sure that it was done properly and equitably, so that’s the reason for the discussion.”

Aston Martin drivers were also left behind at Imola. Sebastian Vettel finished fifteenth. Lace Stroll did better, finishing in P8. Szafnauer confirmed that the team is "still working hard" to make up for the damage sustained. "It looks like the race pace is a little bit better," he concluded.
