Max Verstappen won a fantastic victory in Imola, one that Christijan Albers believes he owes largely to his own qualities. However, he also saw that Verstappen, just like Hamilton, was not faultless.

"Lewis was too eager to join Max in the race," said the former F1 driver in the Formula 1 podcast of The Telegraph. "And of course with the safety car you see Max making a mistake as well. With all due respect, he really had all the luck in the world there as well."

According to Albers, these mistakes are a logical consequence of the situation that has arisen. "They are both under pressure. Max can come across as very calm and all, but he also knows that this year is all or nothing. This is the year he can be world champion or not, because we just don't know what kind of car is going to be built next year."

Hamilton and Verstappen fans battle off the track

Meanwhile, the battle is also not only between the two drivers anymore, but also between the groups of fans of the two bantams. Reporter Erik van Haren notices in his environment that people like to blame Hamilton when something goes wrong. Unjust in his eyes and Albers agrees, although he thinks Hamilton threw away the victory himself.

"We are back in the 2000s a bit, the Michael Schumacher era. If someone becomes multiple world champion, you notice that the favour factor is less. But if we are really realistic Hamilton should have won this weekend. The reality is that the Mercedes was quicker and Hamilton was quicker on the road as well."
