Lewis Hamilton can once again look back at a great qualifying session. The experienced Briton has shattered many a record, and yesterday he once again took pole position at a track where he had never done so before. Red Bull, the favourites for the weekend according to many, were left disappointed with second and third place on the grid, even though the three of them were all within a tenth of each other.

Senna & Schumacher

Hamilton sounded ecstatic and surprised with his pole position on the radio. He also took this happiness to the FIA press conference, where he did not hide his joy. "It was phenomenal. It's a great circuit and of course it has the history. I can obviously remember how Senna and Michael Schumacher drove here, so it's great to come to this track and do well."

The roles reversed

Despite the joy of pole position, Mercedes will still be in a less familiar, uncomfortable position for them tomorrow. Last season Verstappen was usually up against the two Mercedes cars of Bottas and Hamilton, tomorrow things are reversed given the poor qualifying of the Finn, who will start from P8. "Yes, it's very different. I can't remember the last time I saw the Red Bull's so close. I don't know what exactly happened with Valtteri, but it's difficult to overtake here, so we won't have his support from the start."

Still, despite a strategic disadvantage, Hamilton is certainly not ruling out a good result. "If our positions remain unchanged after the start they obviously have a stronger hand when it comes to strategy. However, that doesn't mean we can't try something different and do something unique here," said the confident Briton.
