Rinus VeeKay cites inexperience as partial cause of his crash

Rinus van Kalmthout, also known as Rinus VeeKay, will start his second season in the IndyCar Series this week. He will have to do so with a broken finger, an injury he suffered during the first test day before the Indy 500.

Van Kalmthout already indicated that he is experiencing little discomfort from his broken finger. In conversation with the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com, he tells that the heavy crash was caused by a combination of a gust of wind and some inexperience. "The gust came late in the corner and suddenly I had so much pressure on the front wheels that the rear wheels couldn't keep up. Before I knew it I was in the wall", says Van Kalmthout.

'Better now than in May'

Initially, he thought he would come out of it unscathed, but in the end, it turned out that his left index finger was broken. Van Kalmthout says he feels good and can even continue his training as usual. However, the gear shifter on his steering wheel has been slightly modified due to the splint around his index finger.

Mentally, the crash hasn't made much of an impression. "I see it as a good lesson", says Van Kalmthout. "Besides, it's better to happen now than in May." The second season of the IndyCar Series gets underway this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama.
