Red Bull made a big change after the end of last season. Alexander Albon left the team because of disappointing results. Sergio Perez took his place. For Albon, it also meant the end of Formula 1.

The previous teammates of Max Verstappen who were put back were Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat. Unlike Albon, they were able to continue racing in Formula 1 because they were moved back to the second team. Albon had to look for a new challenge and found it in the DTM class. He also remains active as a reserve and test driver for Red Bull.

Important role as test driver

The Thai is happy that at least he can still do something in Formula 1 for Red Bull. Indeed, he doesn't think he can return to Formula 1 if he is only active in the DTM he says at Autosport.com. "A lot depends on how it works with BoP [in the DTM]. As long as I do my work on my side ... Of course, my role also in the reserve driver, simulator duties and testing, that's a much bigger role [to return to F1]."

Yet he also gets what he wants in the DTM. "I do enjoy it, it's a different challenge and a completely different driving style. In the beginning, it was mostly exaggerated driving because you have a kind of muscle memory of how to take some corners and how to drive, and it's almost like restarting that process."
