Red Bull Racing was relatively patient with Alexander Albon, but after one and a half years they replaced him. Because of this Albon has no place with another team. Johnny Herbert thinks it would have been better if Red Bull had intervened sooner, like they did with Pierre Gasly.

Indeed, Gasly has developed in one year at AlphaTauri into a driver who leads the team and can perform under pressure. He was rewarded for this with a Grand Prix win at Monza, but not with a promotion to Red Bull Racing. That, according to Herbert, was a missed opportunity in more ways than one.

"I've known Alex since he was born," the former GP winner is quoted by Motorsport.com quoted. "It just didn't work out for him. Helmut stuck with him anyway and they did everything they could to make it work anyway. It just didn't happen. I already said in Monza that they should put Pierre in that car. He was in top form."

Perez was already in the waiting room

"But they already had their plans with Sergio. That's why that didn't happen. And for Alex, and this sounds terrible, it would have been better if he had swapped with Pierre as well. Back in the AlphaTauri and see if he can get himself back together mentally," Herbert said.

Now Albon will have to do that in the renewed DTM-championship. For that, he recently tested with his new Ferrari. Although he will stay busy there he will mainly be racing against young talents and retired F1 drivers. The question is whether that will really help him.
