Binotto: "It was a team that had been through a very difficult time"

Ferrari experienced a low point in 2020. After the case about the illegal engine, some changes had to be made, after which the podium was anything but a given for the team. In 2021 Ferrari is determined to put all this behind them and come back stronger.

Team boss Mattia Binotto is entering his third season at Ferrari. He started at the team in 2019, in which Ferrari made a modification to the power unit but those modifications had to be adjusted in 2020. 

Ferrari has a difficult time behind them

He talks about how the team was doing when he arrived. "It was a team that had gone through a very difficult time, but at the same time was able to look forward by strengthening the staff and investing in young people," Binotto said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport .

However, there is still a lot of work to do according to Binotto.

"The work is not finished until we start a new winning cycle. To achieve this, we have already changed a lot in the last two years," Binotto continued.

So will the Ferrari engine be back at the top level? "I think the gap has narrowed, but not yet completely closed. In 2022 we want to improve further because the others are not sitting still either. The 2022 engine will then be used until the end of 2024," said Binotto.
