The Le Mans 24 Hours has been postponed, the organisers announced on Thursday afternoon. Originally, the legendary WEC race was to take place on 12 and 13 June. However, it has now been decided to postpone the event by more than two months, to 21 and 22 August.

Under the current circumstances, the 89th edition of Le Mans might have been organised on the original date, but the fans would have had to stay at home in front of the television. The current coronavirus situation does not offer enough perspective to assume that spectators will be welcome again in three months' time.

Spectators very important

Pierre Fillon says in a statement: "Although it was a tough decision to make, it is the right one. Holding the 24 Hours of Le Mans behind closed doors for the second year running would be unthinkable", said the Automobile Club de l'Ouest president. Why is the weekend of 12-13 June being scrapped at such an early stage? "We are therefore doing all we can to avoid that happening and to give competitors a clear view of the whole season."

The Frenchman continued: "We are working very hard to put on a safe event, with all the necessary health precautions in place. This year’s race promises to be another thriller as the new Hypercar class makes its debut," concludes Fillon in conversation with the FIA website. In any case, the Le Mans 24 Hours will be working hard to welcome fans in mid-August!
