Unusual year or not... 'We will give everything to make the best of it'

For many teams, the 2021 season is not particularly interesting in advance. This is because the developments allowed were relatively limited. The general trend is that it will be more of the same as last year and Haas, for example, has described 2021 as a transition year/intermediate year. For newcomer Mick Schumacher that is a somewhat unusual situation, especially in a sport that is normally so progressive.

First see, then judge

In conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport, the young Schumacher was asked about this, but he says he has difficulty giving a good answer. "I will have to wait for the first couple of races to give a well-founded answer," he said. For now, Schumacher is mainly focusing on his preparation and making a good impression in his first season, as that might open doors to more.

He continues: "Of course I expect a lot from myself. I want to settle into the team very quickly so that I feel comfortable - and they feel comfortable with me. If we can do that, then the results will come. Even if it is a gap year for us, if the opportunity arises and there is a bit of luck involved, we will give everything to make the most of it."

Still, such a gap year could relieve some of the pressure in a sport where performance is everything. Schumacher does not see it that way, however, as he still puts pressure on himself. "There is always pressure. I did it to myself. I have expectations of myself. I want to see a difference between the beginning and the end of the year. That I have developed, improved and worked with the team as well as I can," said the German.
