A lot of support for sprint races: “All the teams recognised the importance”

Formula 1, FIA and the ten Formula 1 teams had a lot to discuss Thursday. Not only was the engine freeze discussed, the option of sprint races was also on the agenda.

Support for sprint races

In a statement from the FIA about the meeting of the so-called Formula 1 Commission, it is stated that the teams are open to holding some sprint races next season. "All teams recognised the great importance of engaging fans in new and innovative ways to ensure an even more exciting weekend format," the statement read. "There was therefore broad cross-party support for a new qualifying format at some races."

Working group

A working group has now been set up with the aim of developing the plans further. "The working group has been given the task of creating a complete plan with the aim of reaching a final decision before the start for the 2021 championship."

The plan should clarify issues such as weighting of points, possible prize money and the impact on driver contracts.

Should the plan receive final approval, Formula 1 plans to hold three 100-kilometre sprint races in 2021. This would happen during the Grand Prix weekends in Canada, Italy and Brazil. The regular qualifying session would then be moved to the Friday to form the starting grid for the sprint race on Saturday. The result of the sprint race would then determine the final grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
