Unemployed F1 drivers and old legends must save DTM

After the departure of Audi and the adoption of the GT3 regulations, the DTM championship is now looking for ways to maintain the prestige of the class. Amongst other things, by binding some big names to it.

A few weeks ago it was announced that Red Bull would sponsor a team in the renewed DTM championship and provide drivers for it as well. One of them is Alexander Albon. His presence in the DTM immediately gives the class a bit more allure, as does Jenson Button, who will even be at the start with his own team.

Hulkenberg wants to remain available as a substitute

Gerhard Berger, the DTM boss, isn't finished yet though. He has some other top drivers on his wish list. According to Auto Bild, Nico Hülkenberg is at the top of that list. The question is whether Hulkenberg wants it too. He filled in for Formula 1 drivers a couple of times last season and reportedly Hulk wants to take on that role again in 2021. With the ongoing coronavirus crisis, he thinks he has a good chance of getting back into something.

In that case, obligations in the DTM shouldn't get in the way. Berger is therefore also looking at well-known names who currently have nothing better to do, such as Jacques Villeneuve. “Jacques would fit into the concept perfectly. In the end it is a matter of financing. Everyone is trying to find sponsors,” Berger said. Villeneuve is also interested. According to him the DTM is the most attractive racing class next to Formula 1.
