Tost hopes for faster Red Bull in 2021: 'Mercedes is now clear favourite'

Last year was a good year for AlphaTauri. Although they did not score loads of points, they did manage a victory, something that only Mercedes, Red Bull Racing and Racing Point managed to do in 2020. Expectations for 2021 are high, especially with the arrival of Yuki Tsunoda.

Franz Tost, who with Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda has an exciting line up, also sees this. "Gasly has already proven himself by winning a race. With Yuki we have a young supertalent that we want to hear a lot more about. Of course it is not certain that we will be successful. Although we won a race and were fast almost everywhere, we still finished seventh," Tost explained in conversation with F1-insider.

Perfect line up for AlphaTauri?

The AlphaTauri team boss expects 2021 to yield better results. "We are in an optimal scenario for next season with the perfect lineup. We have an experienced driver and a young driver who can learn from him, especially when it comes to the technology and the setup of the car. You can find those a lot quicker now. With two young drivers it's a lot more difficult and it takes more time."

Tost is not only keeping an eye on his own team, but also Red Bull. He expects a lot to happen there too for 2021, although they will have to make a big step then. "Let's not fool ourselves, Mercedes is the clear favourite. They still have a clear lead, especially on the engine side. But, I expect that our engine partner Honda will still come up with something, which will show how well they have done," Tost concluded.
