Mercedes not afraid of Red Bull interpreting rules better: "We embrace change"

Mercedes are not afraid of what is to come in Formula 1 in 2022. New regulations will be brought into force in the pinnacle of motorsport, providing an opportunity for teams to close the gap on the current World Champions. 

"We also face the huge challenge of slightly modified regulations for 2021 and a huge change in the rules for 2022. There are factors that work against us and that motivate us greatly, but there are also factors that work for us because we believe we have a good organisation. In general terms, we embrace change and have done so in the past. So the organisation is definitely looking forward to 2022," Wolff told Motorsport.com.

The main focus for 2022 will be changes to the cars themselves. The same engines will continue to be used, so it is likely that Mercedes will remain the team with the most power.

Budget cap a challenge for Mercedes

From an organisational point of view there are already some important changes planned for this season, including the budget cap. Formula 1 teams are only allowed to spend $145 million from this year and for a top team like Mercedes that means major changes to the structure of the organisation.

"It will be an interesting year for us, because we have to structure ourselves in a different way than usual because of the budget cap," added the team boss. Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari have been given until the middle of 2021 by Liberty Media to find another place for some of the staff. Not every employee can remain active in F1.
