In recent years Max Verstappen has proven to be Lewis Hamilton's biggest challenger outside the Mercedes team. Since then, the question has regularly been asked who actually is the best driver in Formula 1. Father Jos Verstappen is in any case not afraid to find out.

Who most successful driver statistically is now a certainty. Hamilton has broken or equalled all of Michael Schumacher's notable records. He owes part of this to the Mercedes team. Jos emphasises in an interview with Formule1.nl that things didn't go so well during his time at McLaren.

Despite the fact that Hamilton wins by far the most races, it could be that Verstappen is actually the better driver of the two. That is difficult to estimate at the moment. "Max always drives at 110 per cent. That's why we don't really know how good or bad the car is; maybe our car was worse than Ferrari's ...", Jos says.

Albon is no slouch

In his opinion, this possibility is not so unrealistic, because, in view of his karting past, he actually held Alexander Albon in high esteem. According to Verstappen senior, the fact that Albon looked bad next to Verstappen says something about the speed of the car that Red Bull Racing put on the asphalt last year.

The only way to really find out which of the two is the best driver is to drive Verstappen and Hamilton in the same team. Jos is not afraid of that confrontation: "Let me put it this way: I wouldn't mind if Max would drive alongside Hamilton. Therefore it's clear what I think."
